Thinking about your next trip to Madrid? The capital of Spain is, without a doubt, a complete destination: gastronomy, culture and landscapes. In this article we are going to recommend a 2-day itinerary from Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, the perfect starting point.

Day 1: exploring the historic centre

There is no better way to start the day than with a good coffee, and the best thing is that there are plenty of options around Puerta del Sol. Charge up your batteries in one of the many cafés.

We continue our first day in Madrid with a visit to the Royal Palace, the largest in Western Europe with more than 3000 rooms. It can be visited inside, so you decide how much time you want to spend on this stop. Don’t forget to visit the Sabatini Gardens, they are located just opposite and the best thing is that no matter what time of the year you go, they always have a special charm.

We continue with a classic lunch in a traditional restaurant in the centre to try some of the delicacies they cook. Casa Botín is the oldest restaurant in the world, named by the Guinness Book of Records. It will be quite a culinary experience, and if you want to try their specialities, you should order one of their Castilian roasts.

To continue with the visit, there is nothing better than a stroll. The Plaza Mayor is one of the must-see places you have to visit, its beautiful buildings and good atmosphere will leave you open-mouthed. Next, the San Miguel Market brings together the best of the Spanish capital. You’ll be able to see all kinds of gourmet products and even try some if you feel like it.

The first day in Madrid will end with a classic: a night walk along the Gran Vía, the most important street in the city. Let yourself go and enjoy the illumination of the buildings and the atmosphere.

Day 2: discovering the cultural treasures

On day 2 of our route we will enjoy the most cultural part of Madrid. We recommend you to have an early breakfast to go to the Prado Museum, a must for art lovers. Walk through its corridors and delight yourself with paintings of the greatest artists such as Goya’s La maja desnuda or Velázquez’s Las meninas.

We continue our tour with a classic of the city: the Retiro Park. Enjoy the air and the atmosphere that is always there. Don’t forget to visit the Palacio de Cristal, located in the park itself. This iron and glass building is one of the stars of all the cameras.

For lunch, there is nothing better than eating with a view of the park. You have many options to do so, Aarde is one of the best terraces in the area with fresh and seasonal dishes to enjoy the moment.

On a day with cultural visits, the Reina Sofia Museum is a must to enjoy the best contemporary art. Don’t miss the famous Guernica by Picasso or La casa de la palmera by Miró.

How to end these two perfect days in Madrid? With a dinner in the Retiro area before enjoying a show. Depending on your tastes, you can opt for a play or soak up the most Spanish art by going to see a flamenco show.
